RooT People’s Healing Conference and Clinic

Fall 2024

A PEOPLE'S CONFERENCE FOR THOSE
IMPACTED BY VIOLENCE AND TRAUMA

RooT’s People's Healing Conference and Clinic is an opportunity for people who have been impacted by trauma and violence to explore holistic and collective approaches to healing. Our introductory workshops acknowledge the healing capacity that exists within each participant. The facilitator's role is to create the conditions for participants' inherent healing to emerge.

Collective healing workshops and one on one space holding offer participants a variety of practical skills to address the impacts of trauma.

This year we are working with a virtual model, offering online workshops and virtual and in person one on one clinics.

Unlike most conferences, sessions are interactive and geared toward assuring that participants walk away with knowledge that is immediately usable, for both personal and communal growth.  Sessions are NOT recorded, as participants may share sensitive content.

This is a practice space. Come ready to participate.

Sessions are sliding scale.

Live captioning will be available.

Contact Rosa@wetakeroot.com with other access needs requests.

15% of all proceeds will go to
Shumi Land Tax to support the rematriation of Ohlone Land and the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund to support the medical needs of children in Palestine.

Virtual Workshops

  • Intro to Somatic Healing

    Nov 24: 10 AM - 1 PM PST

What is body/somatic awareness and how is it different than the cognitive-behavioral awareness often used in "talk-therapy?" This session invites us to release shame around our protective/stress responses to trauma, violence, and triggers. We will use large and small group dialogue, embodied visualization, and journaling as tools to help us begin to map the wounds in our bodies and provide the medicine and healing they signal. Our practice will utilize anti-capitalist tools of slowing down time, re-imagining self-care work as courageous self-explorative work beyond consumerism, and being curious about our discomforts. We offer a brave space for participants to explore consensual radical honesty about our shadows while acknowledging the tools and capacity needed to heal, already present within us. This workshop serves as a foundational workshop for all others in this Healing Conference and Clinic and is open to all participants.

  • Embodying Boundaries

    Nov 24: 3 PM - 6 PM PST

In this workshop, we'll explore, play, and tend to our boundaries as an instrumental step in healing our trauma. Through various somatic practices, we'll move towards reclaiming and deepening the felt sense of choice, clarity, trust, and empowerment in ourselves. We'll explore the somatic ranges of where we begin and end, our clear "NO" to our joyful "YES", and everything in between.

*Please have a dowel, broomstick, or wood stick nearby.

  • Recovery Circle

    Nov 26: 3 PM - 6 PM PST

Are you on a recovery journey or feeling sober curious? Step into a peaceful, heart-centered space where you can pause, reconnect, and explore what balance looks like for you. In this Recovery Group, we’ll open our hearts and ground our minds, bodies, and spirits, creating a supportive community where you can share your experiences and reflections.

Whether you're navigating recovery or simply seeking a deeper connection with yourself, this workshop is a retreat from the noise of everyday life. Through guided prompts and honest conversation, we’ll explore how our habits and substances impact us—both positively and negatively—across all areas of life.

No prior experience in recovery is necessary—just bring your curiosity and an open heart! Join us in a brave, compassionate container for healing and self-discovery.

  • Uses of Anger for Black + Indigenous + People of Color

    Dec 1: 10 AM - 1 PM PST

For Black People, Indigenous People, People Of Color, And Mixed Race People

Audre Lorde taught us that anger is a source that can be used "in the service of our vision." This workshop invites us to examine the fear, shame, stigma, and distortions of power associated with anger. Collective exercises and personal reflection in this workshop will guide us to look to anger as a site of wisdom, clarification, and long-sought answers. How is anger an invitation to uncover, learn, and love ourselves more deeply? What does it look like when anger empowers us without overwhelming us? How can we develop a healing relationship with our anger without silencing it?

  • Held through Grace: Untangling our Relationships to Healing through the Practice of Spiritual Bathing

    Dec 5: 3 PM - 6 PM PST

This workshop invites you to share your journey in the work of detangling our lifelong relationships to healing through the communal connection & the loving practice of Spiritual Bathing. In this workshop, we will share in depth discussion about our relationships to grace, intention & practice as people deeply afflicted by the systems of white supremacy. Unraveling the depths of our current understandings of these terms, we will immerse ourselves in the reinterpretation of language and our relationship to it - intertwining the healing powers of ground breaking conversation and connection with others as we go in detail about what spiritual bathing is, and share in building our very own baths together. We invite you to join us in this sacred, online space as we embark on a beautiful journey of untangling our relationships to grace, intention & practice, and how the comforting act of a spiritual bath can help support us in that.

  • Self Compassion as Resistance

    Dec 8: 10 AM - 1 PM PST

Workshop for BIPOC Folk Managing a Mental or Physical Disability

A journey designed for BIPOC individuals managing disabilities to deepen self-compassion through embodied practices and reflective inquiry. We will gather to set intentions and explore the significance of self-compassion in our lives through loving-kindness meditation, journaling, and somatic awareness exercises. Emphasis will be on honoring mental and physical boundaries, while addressing shame and self-judgment. By recognizing the healthcare disparities and intersectional challenges faced by people of color managing disabilities, participants can explore how this awareness can pave the way for embracing self-compassion as a healing practice and as a means of resistance.

Dec 2: 10am-11am PST

Guided by a healing justice, harm reduction, and anti-oppression framework, my personal experiences and commitment to holistic health and wellness drive my passion. As a Sahuamadora (sacred fire keeper) initiated within the Ticiyotl and curanderismo path in Yucatan, Mexico, I have embraced a calling to share ancestral healing practices and herbal remedies with the wider community.

I provide personalized limpias, a traditional Mexican indigenous spiritual cleansing ceremony, to help folks clear energetic stagnation, break unwanted cords, and align one’s mind, body, and spirit. During the ceremony, I work with sacred copal smoke, herbs, eggs, chile, feather smudging, gems, and drumming to strengthen one's auric body and connect them to their inner light and fire.

Additionally, I offer follow-up sessions and integrate platicas (heart-to-heart conversations) to identify one’s needs and guide one's healing journey. After the limpia, I assist folks in developing rituals aligned with their ancestry and spiritual practices to continue the work at home, always ensuring respect and consent.

Outdoor Wellness Sessions

These individual 1:1 wellness sessions are a prayer for an embodied sense of aliveness and possibility in your life. We will co-create a brave space to identify what may bring you closer to emotional, mental, physical and / or spiritual balance. Our orientation towards the natural world will guide our work together. My role is to encourage and lovingly challenge a deepened understanding of what this present moment is asking and how the lessons may be applied in your relationships.

Reiki is an energetic, restorative, hands-on-healing tradition that is deeply relaxing and heals at all levels: mind, body, & spirit. This Japanese tradition, widely practiced in the West, brings about balance, peace, and wisdom to those giving and receiving Reiki. Angela's Reiki practice is trauma informed, rooted in social justice, and seeks to decolonize.

  • By building awareness of how your system is with a conflict or a relationship

  • By increasing your capacity to be with your impact as well as your responses,

  • By offering a playground for trying out ways to be accountable to yourself, your loved ones, and to your values.

We will be using somatic practices to slow down, tap in, map out histories and dynamics, and practice new pathways of being.
